Combining Treatments: What to Know When You Combine Alternative and Conventional Treatments

According to polls by Gallup and other organizations, at least half of all Americans use dietary supplements -- and many don't disclose their use to their physicians. The same is true of dog lovers, many of whom use supplements, but don't tell their vets.

In some ways, this is understandable -- because the US doesn't take alternative treatments seriously, they aren't studied in depth -- and therefore, medical professionals usually aren't trained in their use.

Meanwhile, just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it's safe -- some alternative treatments and dietary supplements have side effects, and giving more than the labeled dose (which laypeople often do) may even result in a toxic effect.

Anything that has an effect on the body may also have side effects in the body.

Without knowing more about how their own medications and treatments interact with alternative methods and supplements, many veterinarians are extremely cautious -- or downright dismissive -- about their use.

Caution is a good idea. There is a lot to know about combining alternative and conventional treatments.

In this important seminar, Dr. Dressler talks about the guiding principles you should follow in order to use the Full Spectrum of treatment options safely and effectively. As always, he also answers questions from members about their dog’s cancer.
